Today was the release of the first wave of Disney Infinity Light FX figures! Each of the six announced figures are permanent retail exclusives (will not be released at any other store).
Each of the figures have had a few minor changes to the sculpt to allow more room for the wiring and LEDs. The plastic base of the figures have doubled in thickness with a black disc added to house all the light components.
The decorative base of the figures have also been redone, making a one side thicker (we image for more room for some type of lighting component, figure tear down coming soon).
The glow affect is pretty impressive, and much brighter than I originally thought it would be. It is done completely differently than the Inside Out memory orb base window. Instead, an NFC antenna is built into the base of the figure which draws power from the portal. A capacitor amplifies the power through a wire (which is likely what is causing the big bump in the decorative part of the base) that runs up a channel inside the leg, torso and arm (the reason for all the bulk up and new sculpts) to a LED inside a beefed up saber hilt.
Vader’s Red Saber has the dullest glow compared to all the other figures, which might just be an issue with the power of that colored LED.
Expect a full tear down of the Light FX figures soon, where we will show you all the juicy details of how the figures work and how the guts are laid out. Update: Check back tomorrow to see the guts inside the new Light FX figures!
A big thank you to Fernando Velez on a crash course on NFC LED tech! A DIY light up Ironman figure tutorial will be coming your way from him very soon!
