The latest patch to Disney Infinity 3.0 finally answers that one burning question we’ve all had since the announcement of the Finding Dory Playset… “How will Dory get around the toy box when she don’t have legs?”
There has been a lot of speculation and guessing about how this will work from the moment they teased some fishy friends joining the Infinity line up. Some have guessed things from a bubble of water surrounding the characters like a big hamster ball while others joked they might roll around in pet store bags like we saw at the end of the Finding Nemo movie.
The solution is wonderfully simple and something that’s gone completely over our heads until now. The fish hover just above the ground and have a host of special effects that give the illusion that they are underwater no mater where they are!
Here’s all the evidence we’ve got on the new swim mechanics:
The recent patch added in a new awesome vehicle: The Manta Ray. Special things happen when you hop on this vehicle. Instead of getting a fun new soundtrack (like some vehicles offer up) instead you get a plopping noise like you’ve been dropped in water. You get a trail of bubbles surrounding you and a different feel to the animations than just flying around in the air, the Manta Ray doesn’t fly… it SWIMS!
Putting the fish figures into play adds a special sort of gameplay filter onto any toy box to give the allusion that it’s under water. There are no cheesy gimmicks or hamster balls of water, instead the game takes the toy box and makes it fish friendly by turning it into a watery playground. Look closely at the photo above and see how the screen is full of tiny bubbles that move and float giving you illusion you’re under water. The bubbles / water effects only appear when you’re riding the new mount.
Now check out the gameplay of the new Finding Dory official companion Toy Box. The entire build of the Toy Box is designed for the fish characters to complete the level. Its 100% a platformer type level with ledges, climbing and enemies. The fish WILL NOT have the ability to fly freely around the map, instead they will be treated like the rest of the characters, keeping to the ground with jumps and climbing. The map even features a rail climb, so the fish characters will have the ability to do everything the other two legged characters can do!
This is why we get the cool new flying manta ray vehicle, so the fish have a way to actually fly around in the playset and in the under water themed toy boxes.

I spoke to one of the DI devs on another website's forums, asking him about the Finding Dory figures and how they'd work in-game. This matches up with what he said, they 'walk' around by swimming and essentially work as normal figures do.
The interesting thing was he said they could also do everything normal figures do. Drive vehicles, ride horses, use weapons, etc. A fish riding a horse around and hitting things with a sword, one of those things you only see in Disney Infinity I guess.
