Fernando Velez is back with another INCREDIBLE custom for the anxious community hoping for a Light FX Kylo Ren.
There have been lots of rumors that we are getting a 7th Light FX figure, and all clues point to Kylo Ren. His Hall of Galactic Heroes pedestal included the signature Light FX frame and a few retailers have even begun listing a seventh Star Wars Light FX figure coming soon.
But why wait for a custom Light FX Kylo Ren when you have all the sick skills that Velez has? Why sit around and wait a few weeks for an announcement when you can sit around for a few hours and give in to the force?
And like Velez did with his first lightsaber custom Ahsoka Tano, he even kicked it up a notch with a saber hilt repaint and design tweak.
So how do you upgrade your own Kylo Ren Figure to give it some Light FX Magic? Fernando explains in a nice little walk through on his journey to the Dark Side.
The first part of your Jedi FX training is to remove the saber from your Kylo Figure:
VELEZ: First step I guess will be to get his sword off… And of course I ended up drawing blood. The tweezers I tried to use to pry his thumb off slipped…
(So be careful when you are tearing your figures down. Some times the glue can be VERY tricky to release on some joints.)
Next Velez picks the best LED to use for the project:
VELEZ: Ok, now to choose size of LED. Instead of white like I did Ahsoka I will try red to see if it makes it brighter.
VELEZ: Flat head and round 3mm seem to be pretty much the same. Not sure how it projects the light down the saber but ran out of round red 3mm so going flat head. See the far left one? I Shaved the border off the bottom to make it a tad smaller.
VELEZ: I used the Dremmel to grind off that tiny lip but have to be carefull not to go too deep or the legs just pop right off.
(Before and after of the shaved LED. Now it’s small enough to fit inside the hilt of the Lightsaber.)
(Another shot of the shaved LED, matching the profile of the bulb and the saber.)
To make the space for the LED, Velez first starts off with a tiny guide hole he predrills at the center of the plastic hilt.
Then using progressively larger bits, he continues to hollow out the hilt until there is enough room for the LED.
Now he has a fully assembled saber hilt with LED inside:
VELEZ: Just like Ahsoka, the hilt will need a black base coat to hide the light.
(Velez then finds a great reference photo from a toy Kylo lightsaber, it’s black with some light silver accents and a tiny red wire running down it’s side.)
VELEZ: The saber is flat black with silver very light accents ( dry brush) and if I can squeeze in a piece of red cable ( wire) will glue that on. Going to green stuff the gash / crevice around the hilt and then sand it down. Going to use as little as possible because this time the whole hilt is exposed.
Before long we have a finished lightsaber, repainted and given a touch more detail.
Next Velez installs it into Kylo’s hand. Check out his previous build with Ahsoka to get an idea of how to run the wires through the body of the figures.
Make sure during your builds that you leave yourself PLENTY of wire. You never know how much you’re going to need while running it through the various body parts to make it back down to the base.
The finished product is nothing short of magical!
